Ginger Tea for Cold & Tummy Troubles

A warm ginger tea is a comforting remedy for colds, congestion, or nausea. As a bonus it’s easy to make and (most) of our kids enjoy it with a bit of honey and lemon! Don’t forget to check out our Top 5 Natural Remedies to Get Prepared for Winter!

Ingredients:

  • 1–2 inches of fresh ginger root, sliced thin or grated (or 1 tablespoon dried ginger chips)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (about ¼ lemon, optional)
  • 1–2 teaspoons honey (optional, for sweetness)

Instructions:

  1. Simmer: In a small pot, combine the sliced ginger and water. Bring it to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes to extract the ginger’s flavor and benefits. If you like a stronger tea, simmer longer (15–20 minutes) or use more ginger.
  2. Strain: Remove from heat. Strain the tea into mugs, discarding the ginger pieces. You should have a fragrant, slightly yellow tea.
  3. Add Lemon & Honey: While the tea is warm, stir in fresh lemon juice and honey to taste (both optional but highly recommended for flavor and added benefits). Lemon adds vitamin C, and honey will soothe the throat and sweeten the spicy ginger. (Remember not to give honey to babies under 1.)
  4. Sip: Drink the ginger tea warm. It will gently warm up the body, help clear sinuses, ease a sore throat, and calm an upset stomach. For a cold, you can have 3 cups a day. For nausea, sip slowly as needed until you feel better.

(Ginger infused in honey is another way to prepare this – simply cover ginger slices in honey and let it infuse for a few weeks, similar to garlic honey, then mix a spoon of ginger-honey into hot water.)
